The strength is depth of the Essex U175 squad was once again illustrated in this match, as despite contributing five players and the non-playing captain to the Open team that was in action at Syston, the home side held a substantial grading advantage in their quarter final againat Bedfordshire at Wanstead House, particularly in the lower order. Nevertheless, the visitors put up a good fight, only just failing to hold Essex over the top eight boards, and can feel somewhat hard done by in terms of the Essex margin of victory.

Early on, Essex looked like running away with the match. A draw on top board was followed by wins for John White, Tim Hebbes (a particularly powerful performance), Paul Barclay and Colin Ramage. However, Bedfordshire fought back and narrowed the margin to 7 - 4 by dint of picking up three victories. The Essex points scorers in this period of play were Neville Twitchell who consolidated to victory after his opponent's piece sacrifice in the opening has at first seemed to give him reasonable chances, Lawrence Trent whose king had looked exposed but who managed to land the knockout punch first and Dave Pearse who settled for a draw after looking to have an edge for most of the game.

Essex reached the 8 point mark when Ian Hunnable's opponent capitulated, but still needed half a point from the four remaining games to secure victory in the match. This came from the most unlikely of the four, when debutant Nick Gough who had been a pawn down from move 12 after being forced to decline his opponent's Greek gift sacrifice on h7 managed to salvage a draw. Terry Whitton then also agreed a draw, and the match was concluded by Ivan Myall (in an ending of queen and pawn against queen) and Howard Grist (in a pawn up opposite coloured bishop ending) both winning on time.
