Essex treated Devon with every respect, particularly as the U150 quarter final between the Counties had suggested that they were likely to prove stronger than their published grades suggested. The match was close throughout but with Essex 7 - 5 in front, calculations indicated that if Trevor Coote could win, Essex would at worst take the match on board count. Trevor duly obliged in the ending, and debutant Dave Pearse followed up by contributing a draw. The two remaining games were both clearly lost for Essex, but although Peter Doye duly resigned once the match was safe, Bill Saunders kept going and was rewarded with an unexpected point when his opponent blundered a rook.
