At 6½ - 7½ down, Essex seemed likely at best to lose on board count since although Neville Twitchell was winning, George McNally appeared at best to have a drawn ending. On reaching the time control and learning of the match situation, George settled down to the task. It was too much for many of his team mates who went outside and sent a periodic runner to ascertain progress. The first hopeful sign was an advantage in time, as George reacted far better to the pressure than his opponent. A pawn was eventually won, then a second and George just had time before his flag fell to queen a pawn and deliver checkmate.
