THE 2000/2001 SEASON
A last minute disaster in the home match against Sussex left the SCCU competition wide open at the half way stage. The team's response to this setback was three excellent performances in the return fixtures, starting with an amazingly comprehensive victory over Kent and culminating with a clear-cut win in the match with Sussex which secured a fifth successive capture of the Montague-Jones trophy.
A bye was obtained to the semi-finals of the National Stages when one of the East Anglian qualifiers declined to accept nomination. With the Open team getting a walkover in the preliminary round this occasioned some correspondence on the SCCU website as to whether it was a case of "lucky old Essex" or "unlucky old Essex". Speaking as the Essex match captain, your webmaster found the fixture gap between 24 February and 10 June ridiculously long. Fortunately it was business as usual in the semi-final against Cambridgeshire. However, in the final at Uppingham, scene of the 1998/9 success over Devon, Warwickshire played the better chess on the day and deservedly retained their title.
