THE FRIENDS OF CHESS
SUPPORT PROVIDED
The Golombek Memorial Tournament
The late Harry Golombek made a substantial bequest to the Friends with the request that the money should be used to assist the funding of tournaments in England. Grants to certain tournaments such as the Agency and Oxford GM events have previously been designated as Golombek events and funded out of the legacy. However it had been decided by previous AGMs to set £6,000 aside for a specific event in memory of Harry Golombek, and on 3 to 11 September this event was held at Paignton alongside the annual congress which has run since 1951 and with which Harry had a long association, beating Max Euwe in the first round of the first congress.
The event was a 10 player category 11 all play all won by John Nunn and Klaus Bischoff. For a full report surf to the BCF website: the cross-table follows.

Braille Chess Association
The Friends offered to underwrite within limits any shortfall in the fund raising efforts by the Braille Chess Association in respect of the team to be sent to the 11th Olympiad for blind players in Zakopane, Poland held on 29 August to 7 September. In the event Friends' funds did not need to be drawn on. We congratulate the Braille Chess Association both of the success of their fund raising efforts and o n the performance of the Great Britain team (Graham Lilley, Chris Ross, Colin Chambers, Bill Armstrong and Stan Lovell), which finished 13th and is believed to have done enough to have qualified to the World Cup which will take place in Germany in August 2001.
Jonathan Parker
Support was provided to assist Jonathan Parker, at the time England's highest rated IM, in participating at the Zonal in Spain in September 2000, where there was a good GM norm opportunity. Jonathan' s 6½/9 obtained the norm and left him in a tie for 6th to 15th ; although he was unsuccessful in the play-off, the FIDE Congress subsequently confirmed him as a GM with effect from 1 January 2001.
