A convincing victory against Hampshire, who were captained by Andrew Smith, son of Essex's David Smith. Essex had a clear grading advantage and were ruthless on the lower boards where a score of 7½/8 was achieved. After the first two hours had produced just two draws (one of which, from Colin Ramage on cup final day, only lasted 9 moves), Essex reeled off five straight wins in the space of 20 minutes and were virtually home and dry. Thanks are due to Daniel Hirsch and Timothy Woods of Sussex for organising the neutral venue and setting up the equipment.
