This was the fixture that brought the team's unbeaten run up to 25 matches, but for much of the afternoon it seemed unlikely to happen. Essex had lost three victims to flu - Roy Heppinstall on the Thursday and Trevor Coote and Ian Hunnable on the morning of the match, and were for once outgraded on paper. Kent were two up for a long time as a result of wins on boards 4 and 16, but just after 5.00 a series of games went Essex's way. Ivor Smith managed to salvage a draw on top board from a pawn down position and Paul Barclay won a game that he really should have lost. Four out of five on Boards 11 to 15 substantially helped the visitors' cause, and with the score at 8-6, Chris Fegan and Ken Clow both agreed draws in pawn up positions to ensure victory.
