For the third successive year, Kent conceded defaults in the opening match at Wanstead House. This time around the three unexpected defaults in addition to the bottom two boards that had initially been conceded meant that there was no real contest, as a series of draws pushed Essex towards the victory target. The one disappointment for the home team was that Kent shaded the games actually played by 6-5, with the two over the board Essex wins not arriving until deep into the quickplay finish.
