One of the features of the Essex U175 team this season has been the strength of the bottom boards, which has always given the side something in hand in otherwise tight matches. In the previous two fixtures, boards 13 to 16 had provided 3 1/2 out of 4; this time around against a Kent side depleted more as a result of absentees in Guernsey than by the competing demands of an Open fixture, they produced, after some scares along the way, a perfect 4/4 which effectively decided the match. The successful players on this occasion were Colin Ramage and Ken Clow, stalwarts of the team with 4 1/2/5 and 5 1/2/7 respectively this season (to go, in Colin's case, with his 4 1/2/5 for the U150s), Dominic Allen registering his first win for the team on his second appearance and Steve Williams brought in at short notice to record his second win in two matches. By the time Steve Williams had won, a further seven games had been drawn and Essex were very close to overall victory at 7 1/2 - 3 1/2. At 5.52, just after Peter Doye had become the first home player to lose, Paul Williamson, playing with the Black pieces as he has all season (an unfortunate by-product of being board 2 in a side whose captain consistently wins the toss) recorded the victory that secured for the Essex U175s with a match to spare a sixth successive SCCU title. The remaining games saw wins for Bobby Payne, who is having an outstanding first season at U175 level, and Sid Kalinsky, while Mark Weighell was forced to concede after earlier declining a draw offer.
All in all a very satisfactory outcome to my 50th match as captain!
