Essex won their first senior national title since 1973 on a long to be remembered day. Most of the team travelled by coach to Birmingham in company with the U100 team (which narrowly lost its final by 6½ - 5½ to Notts). Lancashire were late arriving; seven players sat down ten minutes after the start and a further eight after fifty minutes, with the Lancashire captain being obliged to play himself as a substitute on board 3. Despite this they started well when Peter Doye went down to a most uncharacteristic 20 move defeat. Terry Whitton levelled but with the other early games to finish being drawn the match looked anybody's at 3-3.
In mid-afternoon Essex had a good run of results. After Larry Marden proved too strong for his substitute opponent, Andy King won the most exciting game of the match. When Colin Ramage's draw was followed by a win for Ian Hunnable Essex were 3 points in front but by no means home and dry. Sid Kalinsky lost the next game to finish, while Ivor Smith and David Millward were both clearly struggling. As board count would favour Lancashire, this meant that 2 points were required from the remaining 3 games. Roy Heppinstall sensibly agreed a draw and Mark Weighell also drew after testing the nerves of spectators in the later stages of his game. This meant that a full point from Neville Twitchell's game would give Essex victory in the match, and despite resistance to the bitter end by his Lancastrian opponent Neville duly chalked up his third win with Alekhine's defence in this year's National Stages to secure the title.
