The match that never was. Lancashire in their Centenary Year had succeeded in qualifying for the National Stages in all five divisions. With Essex raring to go with an exceptionally strong team in a rematch of the previous season's Under 175 final, Lancashire conceded on the evening before the match, as their captain had failed to organise a team and did not keep his County colleagues informed of the situation. John Philpott was out on Friday evening chairing an SCCU Executive meeting, but the combined efforts of John Cooke and Linda Philpott were thought to have got the message through to all the Essex players. Peter Doye, however, did not find out and made a fruitless journey up to Syston. This was particularly unfortunate as Peter is a lifelong Arsenal supporter who had passed up the chance of a Cup final ticket in order to turn out for Essex.
