A splendid match, which would have been worthy of the final. Essex were not quite at full strength, as in addition to the missing Rod Nixon the team had "donated" Ivor Smith, Paul Barclay and Colin Ramage to the Open team who were playing a few miles away in Uppingham. However, the 16 selected did just enough on the day, and were never behind in the match. With the score 8 - 6 in Essex's favour, Ivan Myall's opponent could find nothing better than a repetition of moves in a position where he was a pawn down. Trevor Coote then salvaged a rook and pawn ending where he had one pawn against three.
