A crucial win which revived the season for Essex. This was a hard won victory which hinged upon the last two games to finish. David Smith put in a captain's performance by winning a difficult knight and pawn ending in which his passed pawn proved decisive, while Neville Twitchell played superbly under pressure, finding remarkable resources in a complex knight v bishop ending. Neville created a passed pawn from nowhere, for which his opponent was obliged to give up his piece.
