Essex no longer had a chance of qualifying for the National Stages, while Middlesex had already qualified and only needed a few game points to make mathematically certain of the SCCU Championship. The visitors were clearly leaving nothing to chance, and with the top eight all graded 170 or over it was not surprising that the 12½ - 7½ margin of the first encounter between the Counties was repeated. The Middlesex line up was also notable for including Martin McCall and Terry Donnelly, both later to play for Essex, and a very young Luke McShane.
