This fixture was academic in terms of final positions in the table as regardless of its outcome Essex would be champions and Middlesex would finish as tail enders. It was just as well from an Essex point of view that nothing was riding on the match as for once they found themselves outplayed. Credit where credit is due to Zoe Ryle who has improved Middlesex out of all recognition since the start of the season and is three quarters of the way to fielding a team that would be challenging for the championship. In the upper order Middlesex made full use of the advantage of the White pieces, and although the Essex lower boards recorded their customary plus score, the margin on this occasion was insufficient to compensate for the deficit further up. Essex did lead 7-6, but with Ivor Smith and Jason Roberts clearly losing it fell to Paul Barclay to try to save the match. Although Paul played extremely well for most of the session and was the exchange ahead, he ran himself too short of time in the allegro finish and a knight fork sealed victory for the home team.
