Essex have been consistently succesful against Surrey in the U175 competition, with this match representing the tenth successive Essex victory. It was fairly typical of recent encounters between the Counties with Surrey conceding a surprisingly large grading advantage but then putting up determined resistance. Although Essex were never behind in the match, Surrey hung in there for most of the afternoon and the seemingly comfortable margin of victory at the end owed a great deal to two surprising turnrounds, with Paul Williamson winning the ending after losing a piece and Colin Ramage also picking up the full point after giving up the exchange. Most of the other Essex wins were more convincing, although Peter Doye lived rather dangerously.
With the travelling problems that afternoon both teams were obliged to make substitutions. In the case of Essex, Neville Twitchell failed, despite his best efforts, to complete the awkward trip from St Leonards to Coulsdon in time to play and therefore brought to an end a run of 46 consecutive appearances. Typically, Neville persevered with his journey and eventually reached the venue at 4.20 and was able to watch his teammates reinforce their position at the top of the table.
