Essex retained the SCCU Championship in style with a convincing victory away to Surrey. Although an 8 - 8 draw would have sufficed for this purpose, Essex now had their sights on a clean sweep, and from the time that Roberto Waldteufel won in 7 moves there was little doubt as to the outcome. The Essex line up was extremely strong for an away match, and included on top board Andrew Brett who had recently returned to the County and justified his selection with a convincing victory on the Black side of a King's Indian.
