A closer than might have been expected first match as Essex set off in search of the treble. Essex only had half of the team that defeated Yorkshire in the 1998 final on parade, but still had a comfortable grading advantage on paper. There was a bad start for the visitors when Steve Williams mishandled his four pawns attack against the King's Indian, and although Essex hit back to take the lead, Surrey levelled matters up at 5˝ - 5˝. However, the two game still in play which were favourable to Essex were converted into wins by Neville Twitchell and Bill Saunders, and the remaining positions were salvaged into draws.

The day was notable for the scheduled debut of Lawrence Trent, who had already achieved a long series of junior successes, and the unscheduled debut of his brother Stewart who agreed to be substituted on board 14. The 1˝ points that the brothers contributed were vitakl in the context of the match.
