Essex fielded, for the second match of the competition, the strongest team on paper that the County had ever put out in the competition with a top half all graded over 170. That at least was the intention, but each side suffered from the non-appearance of one of their scheduled players. Whereas the non-appearance of the Surrey board 4 simply gifted a point to Martin McCall on his debut for the team, Paul Barclay was available to go in as a substitute for Essex on board 2 and despite being an hour down on the clock did a fine job for his side by achieveing a draw. Essex went ahead early on when Larry Marden won as Black in 12 moves. Wins by Ivan Myall and Colin Ramage together with the board 4 default made the lead 4-0 and although Surrey eventually registered a point when BCF International Director David Sedgwick defeated Tim Hebbes on top board, the Essex lead was never seriously challenged.
