After the close first half of the season, a nearly full strength Essex cut loss in this match and inflicted on Surrey what is so far the heaviest defeat in the SCCU competition sinced this adopted a 16 board format. The visitors conceded two defaults in advance; their board 1 failed to arrive at all and their board 14 did not make the 3.00 deadline. When Ivan Myall won a brilliancy as Black shortly afterwards, the match was effectively over as a contest and it became a question of how large the Essex points tally would become.
