A slightly strange afternoon which was both disappointing as a depleted Essex line up went down to its first defeat of the season and successful as the 5½ game points necessary to make certain of the SCCU title were achieved. Sussex raced to a 3 - 0 lead and were in front most of the afternoon. Although Essex rallied to tie the match at 6 - 6 the home side finished deserved victors, clinching the match when Neville Twitchell with queen against three minor pieces overlooked a discovered check, and themselves made sure of the second qualifying place. Unusually, the four Essex victories were all achieved with the Black pieces.
