An excellent fighting performance on an afternoon when no fewer than 12 members of the squad were unavailable for selection. Despite the absentees, the Essex strength in depth these days is such that they matched their hosts in grading terms most of the way down the order and outpaced them over the last three boards, all of which were won. Essex had the early boost of a 20 move win from Neville Twitchell and were never behind. The afternoon was more comfortable for the captain than the scoreline may suggest, since Sussex came with a late rally to score 2½ points from the last 3 games to finish after the match had been decided in Essex's favour.
