Inspired by the absence of their captain at Upton Park, Essex achieved a comfortable 6½ - 4½ lead. Draws by Neville Twitchell and Martin McCall saw Essex almost at the finishing line. Then disaster struck, and the three remaining games were all lost, Ivan Myall falling for a cheapo in a winning position, George McNally failing to offer a draw that his opponent would have accepted and Julian Winkworth eventually having to give up a long rearguard action. This was the first home defeat for the Essex U175s since Surrey were successful by the same margin at Wanstead House on 5 November 1994.
