This relatively comfortable victory at Wanstead House ensured that Essex U175s will once again be competing in the National Stages of the County Championship. With an early two point advantage thanks to Terry Whitton and Peter Doye, and plenty of good positions on the board the home team, needing only a tie to ensure qualification, always looked strong favourites. Starting at 5.25 there was a flurry of 6 results inside ten minutes, 5 of them Essex victories giving an 8-2 lead. These included wins for Larry Marden as Black on top board and a fifth win in five appearances for the team by Mark Weighell. In the remainder of the session, Surrey managed to claw back the margin a little, but the final game to finish featured a further Essex victory by Martin McCall.
