WANSTEAD & WOODFORD CHESS CLUB
The Club was founded in 1943 and received the BCF Club of the Year Award in 1993/94. It meets on Tuesday evenings at 7.30 at Wanstead House, 21 The Green, Wanstead, London E11 2NT (click here for a link to Streetmap.co.uk and here for a link to the Wanstead House website) and has a membership of about 50 active players. It currently enters two teams in the London League, four teams in the Essex League, two teams in the North Circular League and teams in the Standardplay and Handicap Rapidplay sections of the National Club Championship. Although the Club is open all year round, the main 2009/10 season commenced on 1 September 2009 with a Caterpillar simulatenous display by the main 2008/9 trophy winners (David Spearman, Mark Murrell and Philip Staniland), and will conclude on 8 June 2010 with the Annual General Meeting (N.B. this is a revised date).
On 22 September GM Peter Wells gave a simultaneous display against 17 opponents, conceding draws to Joe Rosenberg, Charlton Siddo and guest Ron Adams of Bishop's Stortford. For a report and photos click here.

The David Wood Memorial Trophy (holder Philip Staniland)
This trophy, presented in memory of David Wood, an extremely promising junior who was killed in a motor accident, is presented annually to the member who has scored most points in matches for the club. The Roy Wagstaff Memorial Shield (holder Mark Murrell)
This shield, to commomorate the club's founder, is awarded to the club member who achieves the highest aggregate score from the Club Championship, Blitz Championship and Lightning Championship together with their best 15 results in matches for the club. Click here for the full conditions.
The Titmas Trophy
This cup is awarded annually to the member who, in the opinion of the Committee, has shown the most improvement in standard of play during the season. This is conditional upon no player holding the trophy more than once and that the club's stronger players are not eligible. The award for 2008/9 was made to Phil Campbell.
2009/10 fixtures and results
London League - Teams will play in Divisions 2 and 3 and the Minor Division.
Essex League - The second team won the Division 2 title last season. This seasons there will be two teams in Division 1, one in Division 3 and one in Division 4.
North Circular League - Teams will play in Divisions A and B and the Lawrance and Finchley Cups. The first team has recorded a fine 4-2 win against defending champions Wood Green in the League and a 4½ - 3½ first round victory against the same opposition in the Lawrance Cup.
National Club. The club are defending champions in the Major. In the standardplay events, teams have been entered in the Major (average grade under 175) and Intermediate (average grade under 145). The first round draw saw us away in both events, to Home Office and Justice in the Major (rearranged for 1 February) and to Newark in the Intermediate (31 January). There were mixed fortunes, with an excellent 3½ - 1½ win in the Major (details and games to follow soon), but a 2½ - 1½ defeat in the Intermediate.
The Handicap Rapidplay took place at Syston on Saturday 26 September, and was won by Wigston. Two Wanstead teams were entered: the first team (Larry Marden, Ian Hunnable, David Smith and Mark Murrell) scored 11 points out of 20 and finished 4th=, the second team (Philip Staniland, John Philpott, Peter Nickals and Charlton Siddo) scored 5½ and finished 7th, but won a free entry for the following year as a result of their handicap adjusted score.
Lightning championship (defending champion John Duggan) took place on 15 September and was won by Gerry Hayes who produced an outstanding display to achieve a score of 7/7, winning with a round to spare and ultimately by two points. 2nd= were Paul Barclay, Larry Marden and David Spearman with 5: Fin O'Regan took the U130 grading prize.
Club championship. This is a 7 round event (defending champion David Spearman). Rounds are scheduled for 29 September, 27 October, 8 December, 19 January, 23 February, 23 March and 27 April. Available round 4 results now posted: Terry Whitton, Larry Marden and Ian Hunnable are tied for the lead on 3½.
Blitz championship (defending champion Larry Marden) took place on 12 January 2010 and attracted 22 entries. David Spearman and Ian Hunnable both scored 6/7, but David took the championship on the operation of the second tie break, sum of progressive scores. Terry Whitton and David Smith were 3rd equal with 5, while Peter Nickals and Phil Campbell shared the U120 grading prize with 4.
Roy Wagstaff Memorial Match. This is a traditional annual fixture with the Insurance Chess Club.
Essex knock-out. Only one team was entered into the 2009 event. The Club won its first match at home to Roding & Loughton 9½ - 2½ but lost in the semi-final to Writtle on board count. For details, follow this link.
Essex team blitz. Only one team played in the event on 12 July 2009 as a result of a clash with the National Club final handicap, and finished 6th out of 8 teams. For details of the 2009 event, follow this link.
