WANSTEAD & WOODFORD CHESS CLUB

The Club was founded in 1943 and received the BCF Club of the Year Award in 1993/94. It meets on Tuesday evenings at 7.30 (NB new starting time) at Wanstead House, 21 The Green, Wanstead, London E11 2NT (click here for a link to Streetmap.co.uk and here for a link to the Wanstead House website) and has a membership of about 50 active players. It currently enters two teams in the London League, four teams in the Essex League, two teams in the North Circular League and teams in the Standardplay and Handicap Rapidplay sections of the National Club Championship. Although the Club is open all year round, the main 2008/9 season began on 2 September 2008 with the traditional "caterpillar" simultaneous display and concluded on 9 June 2009 with the AGM.

The David Wood Memorial Trophy (holder Fin O'Regan)

This trophy, presented in memory of David Wood, an extremely promising junior who was killed in a motor accident, is presented annually to the member who has scored most points in matches for the club. Click here for the full conditions. Current standings and team by team information on individual performances can be accessed via the following link. Philip Staniland has secured the trophy for 2008/9, as his current score of 19½ points cannot be exceeded by any other player.

The Roy Wagstaff Memorial Shield (holder Ian Hunnable)

This shield, to commomorate the club's founder, is awarded to the club member who achieves the highest aggregate score from the Club Championship, Blitz Championship and Lightning Championship together with their best 15 results in matches for the club. Click here for the full conditions. Mark Murrell has reached 27½ points, but this score will be equalled by Ian Hunnable if Ian wins his game in the National Club on 31 May.

The Titmas Trophy

This cup is awarded annually to the member who, in the opinion of the Committee, has shown the most improvement in standard of play during the season. This is conditional upon no player holding the trophy more than once and that the club's stronger players are not eligible. The award for 2007/8 was made to Andy Lu.

2008/9 fixtures and results

London League - Teams played in Divisions 2 and 4.

Essex League - There is one team in each of the four divisions. The first team won its first four matches but subsequently faltered and is likely to finish third. The second team clinched the Division 2 title by winning its final match against Brentwood 1.

North Circular League - Teams played in Divisions A and B. After a shaky start the first team had good results late in the season to retain its place in Division A. The side also reached the final of the Lawrance Cup, but were shaded out by Barnet Elizabethans by 4½-3½.

National Club. The club had again entered the Major and the Minor, which are both knockout events with an average grading limit, and the Handicap Rapidplay. The Major team has reached the final after winning away to Hastings & St Leonards and will play St Albans at Golden Lane on 12 July. However, the Minor team lost by 2½ - 1½ toSnodland in the semi-final.

Lightning championship (defending champion Larry Marden) - this took place on 16 September and was won by John Duggan with 6/7 on tie break from Ian Hunnable.

Club championship. This is a 7 round event (defending champion Ian Hunnable). Rounds are scheduled for 30 September, 28 October, 2 December, 20 January, 24 February, 24 March and 28 April. Round 7 results now posted: Ian Hunnable, and Terry Whitton drew their respective games to finish on 5½/7, but David Spearman overhauled them by winning his postponed game against Steven Marriatt played on 12 May. Grading prizes were won by Arie Nieuwerf and Phil Campbell.

Blitz championship (defending champion Larry Marden) - this took place on 6 January and was retained by Larry Marden with the excellent score of 6½/7.

Roy Wagstaff Memorial Match. This is a traditional annual fixture with the Insurance Chess Club, which will took place on 9 May 2009 at Wanstead House and was won 3½ - 1½ by Wanstread.

Essex knock-out. Only one team was entered into the 2008 event. This won its first match away to Roding & Loughton but was eliminated by Barking in the second round.

Essex team blitz. Two teams were entered in the event on 13 July 2008. The first team (Larry Marden, John Philpott (sub), Ian Hunnable and Terry Whitton) finished 4th= with 14½, and the second (Gerry Hayes, Mark Murrell, David Smith and Sid Burns) finished 7th with 7½. Terry Whitton won the board 4 prize.
