Being preoccupied with my own game in the U150 I relied on occasional reports of progress as the team, captained for the day by Roy Heppinstall, took on the defending champions. Howard Grist lost in just over an hour but Julian Winkworth levelled the score, and after Tim Hebbes had drawn on top board Terry Whtiton made it five wins out of five in putting Essex ahead for the only time in the afternoon. The next four games to finish saw two Warwickshire wins and draws for George McNally and Colin Ramage, before David Millward won to level matters up at 4½ - 4½. However, the final hour of play turned into a procession with Warwickshire winning one game after another in the upper order to finish clear cut and worthy winners.
