THE CAPES TROPHY 2002

The Capes Trophy is an annual lightning (5 minute) team tournament organised by John Capes of Edmonton as a curtain raiser to the season. This year's event (the 43rd), controlled by Gary Cook, was run as three preliminary groups of four, followed by two final groups of six. A late withdrawal meant the need for a bye, and delays affecting two of the Athenaeum players resulted in an unduly strong team playing in final section B. Neither of the two Wanstead & Woodford did especially well, although Julian Winkworth turned in an outstanding individual performance, and the evening was generally enjoyed. The first team qualified for final group A by qualifying as second in their qualifying group and finished in fourth place (the event was won by Powdermill), while the second team after finishing bottom in their qualifying group were runners up to Athenaeum in final group B.
