Michael Bridger v Ian Hunnable, Wanstead & Woodford v Southend on Sea, Essex League Division 1 14/11/2000 (notes by Ian Hunnable)

1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nd2 Nf6 4.e5 Nfd7 5.c3 c5 6.Bd3 Nc6 7.Ne2 Qb6 8.Nf3 cxd4 9.cxd4 f6 10.exf6 Nxf6 11.0-0 Bd6 12.a3 a5 [The books give 12...0-0 and if 13.b4 e5!] 13.Qc2 0-0 14.Bg5 e5 [14...h6 appears too weakening. The text frees Black's position with a strong counter-attack.] 15.dxe5 Nxe5 16.Nxe5 Bxe5 17.Rab1 Unnecessarily defensive. In the post-mortem we looked at 17 h3 which is a great improvement on the text. Instead, Black can now go on the attack. 17...Ng4 18.Ng3 [White had to play 18.Bxh7+ Kh8 19.Qg6 Bxh2+ 20.Kh1 Qxg6 21.Bxg6 Bd6 which is only slightly better for Black] Nxf2 19.Bxh7+ Kh8 20.Bf5 [White has miscalculated on f2 as 20.Rxf2 is met not by 20...Bd4 but by 20...Rxf2 21.Qxf2 Bd4; Now the plausible 20.Qg6 is met by Philidor's 20...Nh3+ etc. Faced with a difficult position, White can only find one of several ways to lose a piece.] 20...Bxf5 21.Nxf5 Nh3+ [Now I pondered whether there was any difference between my intended 21...Ne4+ and 21...Nh3+. It was some time before I noticed that the former meets with 22.Be3!] 22.Kh1 Nxg5 23.Ne7 [I was more concerned about 23.Qe2 although Black has adequate resources with 23...Rae8 (or 23...Bf6 24.Qh5+ Nh7) 24.Nh4 Rf6] 23...Ne4 24.Nxd5 Ng3+ 25.hxg3 Qh6+ 26.Kg1 Bd4+ 27.Rf2 Rxf2 28.Qa4 Rf4+ 0-1
