Report by Ian Hunnable
Technology was in evidence at this event, a Swiss pairing program developed by recent former member John Campbell was being used for the second year and my old BBC Micro was programmed to produce the buzz every 10 seconds.
However, but for some quick action, the Essex County teams might have needed to seek a new home venue when shortly after the end of round 4, the buzzer was seen to be belching smoke. Appropriately enough, the alarm was raised by Sid Burns (groan). Fortunately, the conflagration was spotted in time and switching off was sufficient to avoid a disaster.
The 17-player event itself was exciting enough. In round 3, Julian Winkworth upset the form book by beating hot favourite Li Wu with the white pieces. But Julian then conceded three draws allowing Li to recover the lost ground.
After round 6, with one round to go, no fewer than three players were tied in the lead on 4½ - Li Wu, Julian Winkworth and Terry Whitton. In the final round, Terry conceded a draw to Paul Barclay but both Julian and Li won, to share first place with 5½. Julian Winkworth was declared Lightning Champion by virtue of having won their individual game. The grading prize (U100) was also tightly contested, ending in a four-way tie on 3 points, between Tom Winkworth, Fin ORegan, John Tuitt and Arie Niewerf.
