As befitted the defending champions, Essex were virtually at full strength for the final, and their grading advantage on paper was soon turned into points on the board, with a 5½ - 1½ lead established half way through the playing session. After his fruitless journey to Syston for the quarter-final it was particularly pleasing to see Peter Doye win on his return to Leicestershire. Yorkshire pulled a couple of points back, and progress towards the 8½ points needed became slow, but after draws by Ian Hunnable, Andrew Brett and Larry Marden and a win from Neville Twitchell, David Millward agreed a draw to ensure retention of the title. Subsequently Trevor Coote managed to draw an ending that had appeared hopeless and Bill Saunders ended proceedings with a flourish by hunting down his opponent's king with a rook and two bishops.
